Welcome to the New Home of UKERC’s Energy Data Centre

STFC's Energy Research Unit is excited to announce that https://ukedc.ac.uk is the new home of the Energy Data Centre (EDC). This refreshed platform is designed to be your destination for everything related to energy research in the UK, including:

  • Portal - A searchable gateway to UK energy research data, projects, publications, and visualisations.
  • Blogs and News – Stay informed with the latest insights and updates from the EDC, UKERC and the wider energy research community.
  • Policies and Guidance – Access essential resources to support best practices in data management.
  • Help and Support – Find assistance and tools to make working with energy research data easier and more effective.

What’s New? We’re introducing a new service: the Data Stewardship Wizard later this month. This tool is designed to help Data Stewards create and manage robust Data Management Plans, ensuring compliance and improving data quality across projects.

Looking Ahead In the second half of 2026 and into 2027, we’ll be rolling out a new version of the Energy Data Centre portal, offering enhanced functionality and improved integration to better serve the energy research community.

Does the Weather see a Solar Eclipse?

The recent solar eclipse that happened on 12th August 2026 marked the most complete solar eclipse UK has had in 27 years. The Energy Research Unit at RAL has been tracking weather data including solar irradiance and temperature for the past 40 years, and in this blog we explore how these measurements can be used to view a solar eclipse through data.

The EDC team attended the UKERC 2026 Annual Assembly held at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, which brought together UKERC members from across the consortium along with members from industry and government. This event showcased the working being done within the UKERC research themes, promoted discussions on the importance of energy research within the current energy landscape, and promoted cross-consortium collaboration through Research Integration. The EDC gave a talk discussing the recent work the team has been doing including the introduction of new data management tools and continued improvements to our service. This led to numerous discussions on new ways the EDC could further collaborate with the wider UKERC consortium.

The EDC attends PyConDE & PyData!

PyConDE and PyData Logo, Darmstadt, Germany

EDC staff Peter Holt and Vivek Mistry attended PyConDE & PyDataDE 2026 in Darmstadt, Germany, combining Python and data communities from across Europe. Key themes included pragmatic architecture choices, growing maturity in Python tooling, and effective data visualisation practices relevant to the platforms we use. Volunteering at the conference strengthened community engagement and professional connections. The event provided actionable insights to support EDC’s technical roadmap, developer workflows, and long‑term maintainability, reinforcing the value of simplicity, communication, and sustainable software development.
